HOW TO PLAN YOUR DAY

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PLANING YOUR DAY

Your Morning Routine is the start of your day, by building your Morning Routine around what works best for you, and what helps you achieve more you will reap all the key benefits that we’ve previously spoken about. But what about the rest of the day? Your set up for your Morning Routine will gradually seep through to your day over time, but here is a break down in exactly how you should plan your day to double your productivity and get more stuff done!

HAVE A PLAN

Before the day starts, know exactly what you need to have achieved by the end of it. We’re talking about this from the lens of having a 9-5 (as we both do) so each day will have a mixture of things you need to do, meetings you need to attend and things you need to get done. To start planning your day make a list of what needs to be done by the end of it.

Check in on your calendar. Ensure you have access to all the resources you need for the day before you sit down to start. Review your plan and add in any additional responsibilities you may have.

MAKE YOUR CALENDAR WORK FOR YOU

Set up your calendar with deadlines, much like a project plan for yourself. Add in blocks for anything you need to get done, blocking in time for tasks and understanding the time it takes for each so you can add in buffers.

Add in recurring battle rhythms (such as email checking, task list checking and time to assess and adjust).

Use the colour function of your calendar, coding different tasks, actions, and even priorities. That way you will flow through your day with reminders and blocks that serve you..

EXECUTE

  • Don’t deviate. Start at the start and work through
  • Don’t change the plan – once it’s in motion that’s the plan
  • Keep the Goals and Objectives as the focus
  • Come back to the why for decision making.

COMMUNICATE PURPOSEFULLY

We deep dive into this, but make sure you’re communicating purposefully and ensuring that you are doing it on your terms. Block out time to check your emails, mute your notifications and make sure that you’re communicating with others purposefully and responsibly. In an age where communication is instant, we can often get overwhelmed. We can also get lost in communication that doesn’t serve our exact purpose. By blocking time and making sure you have the big picture before reaching out to others, you will have a better day.

LEAVE TIME TO REVIEW

As with all new strategies, ways and working and habits take time to embed, what works for others doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. Taking time to review and adjust is so important with anything you do in life, so block the time into your calendar to make sure you’re keeping yourself up to date with how your day is going, what needs to be added to tomorrow’s plan and how your planning for the day went.

Use tracking (notion) to get comfortable with exploring how you execute and how you best plan your day.

As with a morning routine, the best plan is the one you stick to. Running into your day head first without setting up a framework will leave you unable to execute effectively and open to distractions and obstacles. Planning helps beat procrastination and increases your productivity by allowing you to focus on what you need to do rather than how you can get to it.
