GOOD MORNINGS EXERCISE SEVEN

A five step exercise to your sustainable wardrobe
The most sustainable wardrobe is the one you already own! Good in theory – but how do you put it in practice….. Well, you actually have to try.

For this month’s exercise, we want you to take one of our key pillars of sustainability into mind and have a look inside your wardrobe and satisfy yourself for less purchases.

1. TAKE OUT EVERYTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE

A lot of us have stuffed wardrobes, pieces hanging up, bits in drawers, perhaps piles of stuff. Often when your clothes are a mess, it’s hard to understand what you have so you can be tempted to purchase more. Knowing your wardrobe will help you be more creative with what you have, and remove the impulse to purchase more.

2. ORGANISE INTO OUTFITS

By getting to know your wardrobe, you will be able to see how all your pieces can come together. Spend some time (grab a friend, grab some wine) trying different combos and outfits to understand the multitudes of use for each piece. Being able to generate different looks with single items increases the wear and reduces the need for repurchasing.

3. TRY THINGS ON FOR SIZE

Part of the reason why we purchase is due to the confidence we get with a new outfit. We often want new clothes to feel a certain way. By going through your wardrobe and trying on things you haven’t seen for a while, you may fall in love again! Delaying the need to purchase anything new for a while.

4. DONATE THE EXCESS

Clothes that don’t get worn aren’t fulfilling their purpose. By donating clothes you no longer need, you will extend their life cycle but allow someone else to carry on their use, perhaps preventing the next owner from purchasing fast fashion.

5. MAKE NOTE OF WHAT YOU NEED

Not what you want. If there are gaps in your wardrobe that will allow other items to be extended and reused, now is the time to make a note (not to purchase) by keeping a list of key pieces, you can wait and purchase these from sustainable brands, investing in better pieces that will last longer. This list will also help you to avoid passion purchasing, by sticking to what you need you should be helping yourself to avoid fast fashion fads.
